MAD ABOUT PATIENCE

WHY MUST I WAIT?!

This is a question everyone asks themselves when in a rut, a lull in life or just a really hard or bad time that one may be desperate to get out of. I get it! I just went through some major downs myself, however, I have realized that the storm actually is meant to teach you and mold you into a better, stronger, learned person. It’s NO fun going through the eye of a storm, but, “The best way out is always through.” I have been reading a tremendous book lately that gave me mind blowing insight. It is called, “Man’s Search For Meaning” by Viktor Frankl, who was a Holocaust suvivor and Neurologist during WWII. First of all, WOW. Second, he shared his time at Aushwitz and his understanding of why some people may have survived rather than others and what life’s true purpose is. I was extremely moved by his memories but was most touched when he stated, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” I also resonated with, “Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.”  I highly recommend you read this book, it is not long, but has just the right amount of truth and advice to coping with life and suffering.

I have always struggled with patience, I mean what young person does not?! Sitting, waiting, wishing has brought nothing but anxiety and emptiness. Until you change your attitude. Once you “Let It Go,” or “Give It To God” as I do, there becomes a sense of peace and calm that takes over you. Frankl wrote in his book that you have to be worthy of your suffering, or waiting. That means that complaining and whining and doing nothing to further or help yourself in the immediate state will do exactly that-get you nowhere. Like in acting, may actors have believed you get an agent and sit by the phone all day and then when the phone does not ring, he or she feels defeated and frustrated with their career and agent. I have always been a Type A person, and must always be DOING. This means, maybe I need my agent for auditions and finding good work, but I can do the behind the scenes! Getting the great head shots, going to workshops, networking and meeting talented people who know other people. Building a community of like-minds, finding my niche and place in the world. Treating myself well, staying healthy and fit, being kind to others, going to dance classes and voice lessons. All these are ways to promote and move yourself forward while being patient. Hustling is not for the weak of heart, neither are dreams! They require two things: persistence & patience. My analogy to my acting career can be applied to any job or goal, being driven and not giving up through the waiting. They do say Good things take Time, however, my favorite quote someone told me in Hollywood once was, “It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey.”
